Tell Us Your Cruise WishesCruise Industry Trends Across Recent Reports
A single year’s report is a snapshot. Lining up several years of research shows the cruise industry trends that matter more: steady growth, a gradually younger mix of passengers, more short sailings and booking habits that have barely changed.
| Measure | Earlier | Latest | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global cruise passengers | 31.7 million (2023); 34.6 million (2024) | 37.2 million (2025) | CLIA, as reported in 2026 |
| US residents on ocean cruises | 19.1 million (2024) | 20.7 million estimated (2025); 21.7 million projected (2026) | AAA with Tourism Economics, Oct 2025 |
| Cruisers booking through an advisor | 60%–66% each year since 2022 | 63% | CLIA, via Travel Market Report |
| Members with a future cruise booked | 94.1% (2025 survey, 7,100+ members) | 92.8% (2026 survey, 5,500+ members) | Cruiseline.com and Shipmate |
Note how the passenger numbers are counted. Some coverage gives a slightly different 2024 global figure, because reports revise earlier years. The direction — up each year — is consistent.
Four Trends Worth Following
- Growth without a dip. Each recent CLIA report has set a new passenger record, and AAA calls 2026 another record year for Americans.
- Shorter and longer at once. AAA and the 2026 member survey see shorter sailings growing, while the 2025 member survey found 45.9% of respondents preferred 8–10 day cruises.
- Younger cruisers. CLIA reports about a third of cruisers are under 40, a share the industry watches closely.
- Brand loyalty shifting. In the 2026 Cruiseline.com and Shipmate survey, Royal Caribbean passed Carnival as the brand respondents most often considered.

Reading Trends as a Traveller
Industry trends affect your cruise in practical ways. Growth means more new ships and more itineraries, but also busier ports and earlier sell-outs for the best cabins. A younger mix of passengers is one reason lines keep adding active attractions and nightlife. The steady share of advisor bookings reflects how much there is to compare: fares that change daily, promotions that come and go, and cabins that differ more than the brochure suggests.
Trend reports also help separate news from noise. A single headline about a crowded port or a cancelled itinerary can feel like a trend; the multi-year numbers usually show whether it is. If you would like to hear about new offers as the lines release them, the Mister Cruise Special Offers newsletter sends them as they are announced, and Wave Season gathers the biggest seasonal sales.
Cruise Industry Trends: FAQ
Why do passenger figures differ between sources?
They count different things. CLIA counts cruise passengers worldwide; AAA counts US residents on ocean cruises and publishes forecasts. Reports also revise earlier years, so the same year can appear with slightly different numbers in different editions.
Is the share of cruisers using travel advisors falling?
Not according to CLIA, which reports that between 60% and 66% of cruisers have consistently booked through an advisor since 2022.
